At the 14th EBM doctoral seminar, Maik Hintze and Rahul Ramachandran shared exciting insights into their spinal cord research — bridging biomechanics and molecular biology in a lively and interdisciplinary exchange.

On May 20th, the “Essentials of Starting a Start-up” workshop took place at ZOLLHOF, Nuremberg, for researchers from CRC 1540 EBM, GRK 2423 FRASCAL, and IGK 2495. Featuring LEGO® Serious Play, inspiring talks, and ideation sessions, it encouraged turning research into innovative, real-world start-ups.

In April 2025, Oskar Neumann spent a research month at the Mechanobiology Lab of the University of Cape Town, training researchers, presenting his work, and exchanging expertise - gaining insights into zebrafish models and innovative biomedical research in South Africa.

On April 25th, EBM members attended a seminar at the Max Planck Zentrum für Physik und Medizin, featuring talks on neuroregeneration and mechanochemical signaling. The event fostered interdisciplinary exchange at the interface of biomechanics and neurobiology.

At the end of March, Clara Froidevaux (A03) and Shanice Heidenreich (C04) worked together to prepare mouse brain slices using a vibratome (see image). These slices will provide valuable insights into the metastasis of melanoma to the brain. Shanice Heidenreich, C04

On March 21, 2025, the harmonization workshop on Magnetic Resonance Elastography (MRE) brought together participants to explore MRE principles and applications. Hosted at ZMPT, the event featured both interactive discussions and hands-on sessions with advanced MRE equipment, fostering knowledge exchange among EBM consortium members.

Lab Shadowing: In early March, Michael Tranchina (A04) and Nina Reiter (B01, BRAINIACS) conducted collaborative experiments to examine the mechanical properties of aging organoids. Using a rheometer, they explored how necrosis and cellular diversity may impact organoid stability and stiffness.

On February 20th, the EBM group attended the Doctoral Researchers' Seminar organized by Jana Bachir Salvador (Project B03) and Ezgi Erterek (Project C02). The seminar took place in the newly established Max-Planck-Zentrum für Physik und Medizin, providing an ideal setting for discussions on integrating physics, medicine, and neuroscience.

Exciting insights into research! During lab shadowing, B01 and B05 showcased how zebrafish larvae help study spinal cord regeneration. The goal: combining biological processes with computational models—an interdisciplinary approach advancing our understanding of tissue mechanics and regenerative medicine.
